What should I wear?
You will find that clothing choices are diverse among those in attendance. Some choose formal, while others wear informal attire. You will discover those leading the service in formal, or smart, business attire. You are welcome to come as you are and wear what you like.
Are children welcome in the services?
Yes! We value the participation of all ages in our services, but we also recognize the benefit of age-appropriate child care for some families. With you in mind, we provide these child-care options during the services.
Nursery: We provide a clean, safe, well-supervised nursery for children 3yrs and under and their parents. Our nursery is staffed by two friendly ladies during the morning service, as needed in the evening service, and is always available to parents. In addition, if you have a nursing child, we are equipped with a discreet location within the nursery to meet those needs.
Junior Church: This ministry is available but not required for children ages 4yrs – 2nd grade during the morning worship service. Junior church children and staff are dismissed just before the sermon.
Seating: You are welcome to sit with your family wherever you would like. To allow ease in caring for your family, we also reserve seating near the back for parents with small children. For more information on Children’s Ministries, click here
What are Sunday Bible Classes like?
Children: We regularly offer three children’s classes: 4yrs – Kindergarten, 1st – 3rd, and 4th – 6th. Our experienced and friendly teachers disciple your child by teaching them from all Scripture with relevant life applications. We seek to disciple children to become spiritually mature believers that measure up to being more like Jesus.
Junior & Senior High: Our combined Jr. and Sr. high school class provides Bible books, Bible character, and Bible topic studies to help your teenager develop a truly Christ-honoring lifestyle and demonstrate genuine faith in their daily lives.
Adult: In our combined adult Sunday Bible class, you can expect a comprehensive presentation of the truth of God’s Word by use of a Bible book, Bible character, and Bible topic studies. This class is intensely Biblical and intentionally practical to help busy adult learners understand, apply, and practice God’s Word in practical, effective ways.
What should I expect for the Sunday morning worship service?
Music – The music we sing at Calvary is a carefully selected blend of old and new hymnody, giving prominence to doctrinally rich lyrics. We emphasize congregational singing to avoid showiness and the exaltation of people instead of God. We enjoy the regular addition of orchestral instruments and individual and group vocalists with a desire to pursue excellence in all areas, including music.
Prayer – When we gather, we value time spent in prayer. We give a significant place for prayer and enjoy spending time in both individual prayer and corporate prayer throughout the service.
Scripture Reading – God speaks to us through his Word, the Bible. Therefore, we take time to listen to Him as we read portions of Scripture together in unison.
Preaching – You can expect primarily expository preaching from God’s Word. This preaching style explains the meaning of a particular Biblical passage within its context with relevant application for today. Messages are usually around 45 minutes. If you want to listen to our most recent messages, you can find them here.
Lord’s Supper – We regularly observe the Lord’s Supper on the first Sunday morning service of every month. We practice “close” communion. You do not need to be a member of Calvary Baptist Church to participate. Still, we emphasize the Bible’s teaching that the Lord’s Supper is an ordinance reserved for the covenanting, gathered, local congregation. As we remember the Lord’s atoning death, we also demonstrate close fellowship with Him and each other as distinct from the world.
What about giving or offerings?
Guests should feel comfortable visiting without obligation or persuasion to give money. We have members who give cheerfully, freely, generously, and regularly out of love for Jesus. Our members give to show obedience to the Lord and that He is worth more than our money. We give to fuel the work of our church in our congregation, our city, and around the world. Ultimately, we give because we are stewards of all that is the Lord’s and because Jesus has given to us. If you would like to give, you can do so by means of the offering boxes made available in our foyer or online here.
What should I expect for the Sunday evening service?
In addition to Bible teaching, prayer, and singing, this service time usually includes missionary presentations, prayer & praises, and occasionally other ministry focuses.
What should I expect for the midweek prayer meeting?
We gather on Wednesday evenings for fellowship and prayer. The emphasis of this time is placed heavily on praying together as a church family. We begin by singing together, hearing from God’s Word in a devotional setting, and then bearing one another’s joys and burdens together in prayer. Teens and younger children are welcome in the prayer service, but we also offer age-specific prayer groups.
Do I need a Bible, and what translation do you use?
We teach from the Bible, but you do not need one to attend. However, we will love to gift you with a Bible if you do not have one of your own. Although you may see several different translations amongst the congregation, you can expect preaching and teaching from the New King James or King James Version.
Where are you located & where do I park?
Please see the map located here. We are conveniently located in central Mesa on University Dr. just east of Val Vista. Our parking lot is accessible and available for all who join us for services. Feel free to park anywhere there is an open parking space. The front row along the church is marked and reserved for those with handicaps and other special needs. The main entrance is marked by a trio of full glass double doors. Our friendly greeters will meet and direct you from there.
Is your building ADA accessible?
In addition to the parking spaces reserved for those who need them, each of our main doors is wheelchair accessible, and there are no stairs to climb for participation in any adult ministries. If further assistance is needed, please ask an usher for help. We want to be of service to you!
